As the ice begins to melt up north, I decided to sit with Isa - the Ice Rune - and reflect on some of the things happening in my life. It's one of the Runes whose meanings is clear and, built into that meaning is caution and treading carefully. It tells us to pause and look around, to see the whole picture and then take the next step. This is what makes Isa the perfect Rune to hold when you are contemplating things.
Before I create a plan, I like to sit with Isa to think about it. Then, I usually draw three Runes to support the issue I'm thinking about, and there tends to be a common process in those Runes. The first one will tell me what I need to consider, the second will tell me how to go about it, and the third gives me the results results I should get if I follow the plan.
It's a little like a Norn reading; Urd is the the past - what you must consider. This one may seem like a bit of a stretch, but hear me out. When you consider things, the past is a major part of that consideration whether you realize it or not. What have I learned from the past? I don't want to repeat the past. Should I try it again? I've done this and this, now how do I do this? Everything builds on the past one way or another.
The second Rune - telling you how to go about addressing the issue - represents Verdandi, what you must do in the present. This isn't always a clear action. Sometimes it is a skill or feeling you possess. Isa will help you process the meaning. Skuld aligns with the third Rune. She is not exactly the future, rather more what should be (as I noted above) if you do what you need to do in the present; the results you will get.
I had a few friends try sitting with Isa to contemplate a single issue in their lives and then draw three Runes. I should point out here that this process differs from an interpretation, because you have been sitting with the issue, considering it from all angles, weighing pros and cons, etcetera. It's more like a mini ritual. Anyway, here is what happened for them:
One friend had a situation at work and she wasn't
sure if she should tell Human Resources about it. She sat with Isa an hour a day for three days and then she drew Algiz, Gebo, and Ingwaz. It was her past experience with taking care of herself through Algiz that gave her the gift (Gebo) she has for speaking up for others that she needed to use. Ingwaz assured her that the time was right.
Another friend is contemplating getting a second job to pay for a trip he wants to take. He sat with Isa for two hours and drew two sets of three, first on what kind of job he should get and the second on his ability to actually make the trip happen. The two hours and two sets signify the second job - 2, 2, 2. Wunjo (the joy Rune) and Kenaz (the torch Rune) overlapped these two draws. Along with Raido, the riding Rune, at the beginning of the first draw, and Ehwaz, the horse Rune, at the end of the second, he discerned that whatever job he got would have to use his artistic skills, because that is what would make him happy and able to stick with the job to raise the money for the trip. He could also make the trip work, but it might happen in a non-traditional way.
Finally, another friend recently broke up with her long-time boyfriend and she was thinking about contacting an old boyfriend, not to get together with him, but to resume the friendship she let fall by the wayside, so as not to create any problems with the boyfriend who just ended their relationship. She sat with Isa for a total of seven hours, an hour a night for a week. Then, she drew her three Runes - Laguz (the water Rune), Wunjo (the joy Rune) , Berkana (the birch Rune). Her relationship with the old boyfriend had always been easy (Laguz), they navigated everything without a fuss; it just flowed. The idea of reconnecting with him and finding out what he'd been up to for the past few years made her happy (Wunjo) and she wanted to act on that happiness. However, she also had to realize that whether or not he responded to her, was secondary to the fact that reaching out to him was a big step in moving past her recent break-up and getting on with her life (Berkana).
Through my own process and those that my friends undertook, Isa helped us to focus and contemplate before we drew our Runes, which gave us clearer results. I hope sitting with Isa can help you in the same way.

Runes 401 - Rune Rituals - Face Fears
Last month, I experienced one of the most traumatic moments of my life. I was confronted by a fear whose depth I had not fully realized. To some, it may sound silly to say that I had a panic attack driving over a big bridge, but that is where I found myself. I am still not sure how I managed to get across it and it still seems as though the three to five minute drive took an hour or more. What's worse, the experience began snowballing the week after the event and I found myself becoming fearful of driving over any bridge, big or small and, like it or not, I have to cross a big bridge on a fairly regular basis. I knew I needed help, guidance; so, I turned to the Runes.
When dealing with situations of facing deeply felt fears, we need something that will make us feel calm, instill a bit of confidence, and maybe give us the slightest sense of empowerment or ability to succeed or overcome. In essence, we need something that will give us the strength to face our fears and some of you may know what that is for you. I had no idea what it was for me, but the Runes offered me the best chance of finding something.
The first step of my ritual was contemplation. Lying in bed, I relaxed and thought about all the Runes and their meanings. Through that process, I narrowed it down to five Runes - Jera (my guiding Rune), Uruz, Wunjo, Thurisaz, and Eihwaz.
Next, I took each of these Runes and held them in my hand one by one and focused on what they represent. Jera is about process and getting from point A to B, which is a big part of what I needed to do driving across a big bridge. However, I did not feel the courage I needed to have as the other part of it. Uruz represents physical strength and freedom, but I needed mental and emotional strength. Wunjo, though a strong emotional Rune, did not offer quite the right emotion for this situation. I really thought Thurisaz would be the Rune, but when I held it in my hand, I felt the power behind it would turn to disaster, because the great power that comes out of this Rune has to be controlled and I did not believe I could control it in this situation. Then, I held Eihwaz and, immediately, I was calm. This was my Rune.
It has been a year and a half since I wrote about Eihwaz, where it served as a symbol of bravery and a reminder to be mindful. The fact that it represents a tree, firmly rooted to the earth (as opposed to being suspended high over a large body of water) resonated well with me too.
Finally, two weeks later, I had to cross another big bridge. I carried Eihwaz around with me for a few days before having to drive over another big bridge. As I carried it, I thought about its meaning and it helped calm me down, so that I could focus. When the time came to cross the bridge, I held Eihwaz in my left hand and chanted "Eihwaz offers me strength. As a tree, it is rooted and as a tool its arrows shoot straight from its bows." I needed the reminder of the tree being rooted to the ground, but I also needed the focus of the arrow being fired from the bow and following a straight path to get me over the bridge without acknowledging one side or the other. Thank you, Eihwaz.
What Rune would you use to help you get through an anxious experience?

401 - Rune Rituals - Calm and Relaxed
As many of you know, I am engaged in a solstice to equinox passion challenge related to my writing. So far, things are going well, almost too well. I am finding myself so wound up and excited about this endeavor that, when it comes time to relax and go to sleep, my brain has other ideas.
Since I am in a very active stage right now, I decided the best way to approach this issue was to conduct a ritual around the theme of calming down.
Isa was the first Rune that came to me. It seemed the logical choice to include in this ritual given its state - ice. However, it goes beyond that. When I think of cold, icy places, my mind moves north to the lands I love, which brings me peace and puts me mentally in a place I long to be. With this to frame my thoughts, I began gathering the other items I wanted for my ritual journey.
As I went through my Runes, looking at each one, holding each one and considering its meaning, I gravitated to three more - Nauthiz, Eihwaz, and Algiz. I also considered Tiwaz, but decided against it in the end, because, despite my strong connection with Tyr, this Rune invokes too much energy in me for my intention here.
I looked at Nauthiz in detail a couple of weeks ago and, last month, it was Eihwaz. I find it interesting that these two Runes keep coming up for me lately. Algiz, by comparison, comes up maybe once every few months.
Besides the Runes, I turned to my primary element - water - but opted not to include Laguz in this ritual as it is about calming and relaxing, stillness, and a Laguz has strong association with movement through the flow of water. However, river rocks, which lie still on the river bed, while the water flows over them, seemed the perfect complement.
For this ritual, I staggered the Runes over a pile of river rocks along with four ice cubes (one for each Rune, though they are hard to see in the picture). I sat and thought of each Rune and noticed two very similar aspects they shared. First, I noticed their shape. Each one contains Isa as its center and is evenly balanced on either side of it. Second, each Rune represents a form of strength in its meaning - Eihwaz standing one's ground or standing up for yourself, Algiz is the Rune of self defense and protection, and Nauthiz gives us strength by reminding us to look at what we need, what is necessary.
With this ritual, unlike the ones I did with Ansuz and Fehu, there was no chant. Instead, I sat in quiet contemplation, realizing that not only did my action signify a key aspect of Isa - stillness - but that the other three Runes are giving me subtle strength to take what I need, which is a time to calm and relax myself so that I may sleep well.
As I sat quietly, allowing my mind to wander around these Runes, the most interesting thing occurred. Idunn's essence came to help me through my ritual. Instead of looking at her as the goddesses who tends the apples for the gods and goddesses, I looked at what the apples do. They keep the gods young, essentially invigorating or revitalizing them. And, that is what I seek - a good night's sleep to revitalize me, which in turn, will help to keep me on track with my passion challenge.
By embracing the intention of this ritual and sitting in quiet contemplation of its meaning, I got what I needed. I knew I needed sleep and this ritual reminded me why; it connected all the pieces and showed me that this endeavor is entirely in my control and part of a larger aspect of who I am and what I want to accomplish. This ritual reinvigorated me and I am sure I will sleep soundly for the next while.
Wishing you peace and relaxation until next week...
